A mural commemorating singer Kora at Nowy Świat 18/20 in Warsaw was vandalized with black paint on or before March 23rd.

Mural Vandalized

The mural dedicated to the memory of singer Kora, located at Nowy Świat 18/20 in Warsaw, has been defaced. Black paint was applied to the artwork, with the damage first noticed on Monday, March 23rd.

Artwork Details

The mural, created by Bruno Althamer on behalf of “Wysokie Obcasy,” was unveiled on January 17, 2019. It features a chestnut tree whose branches form the “hair” of Kora, creating a mural that changes with the seasons. The Śródmieście district notes it is a popular destination for fans.

Investigation and Restoration

The vandalism occurred directly on the artist’s face. Śródmieście district spokesperson Jakub Leduchowski stated that surveillance footage is available and may help identify the perpetrators. A report has been prepared for the police, and the mural will be restored.

Symbolic Significance

The mural holds significant symbolic value as one of the most recognizable memorials to Kora in Warsaw, due to its combination of portraiture, natural surroundings, and central location.

Reaction from Husband

Kamil Sipowicz, Kora’s husband, expressed sadness over the vandalism but suggested it may not have been specifically targeted at his wife’s memory. He plans to contact the city regarding the mural’s renovation.
