Vandals defaced the Turkish embassy fence in Warsaw with the message “Turkey in Rojava Kills Women” on Tuesday morning.
Vandalism at Turkish Embassy
This morning before 10:00 AM, an act of vandalism was discovered on the fence surrounding the Turkish embassy building on Rakowiecka Street in Warsaw. The message “Turkey in Rojava Kills Women” appeared on the fence facade.
The vandalism was noticed by a police officer from the Diplomatic Facilities Protection Department. Police technicians were dispatched to the scene to carry out procedural actions and secure evidence. Police also checked the area around the embassy, but the search did not lead to finding the person who wrote the message. Monitoring from nearby cameras was secured. After 14:00, an official report was filed in this matter.
Context: Rojava and Kurdish Structures
The phrase that appeared on the fence refers to Rojava – the common name for the northern and northeastern parts of Syria. After the outbreak of civil war in this region, administrative structures emerged functioning as the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria and the armed forces SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces), in which Kurdish formations play an important role.
Turkey for years has conducted operations against these structures described as “anti-terrorist,” pointing to connections between YPG/YPJ and PKK.
PKK Designation as Terrorist Organization
PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) is recognized as a terrorist organization, among others by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union. At the same time, the issue of relations between PKK and Kurdish formations in Syria remains one of the main points of contention in the international debate about the situation in the region, including the nature and objectives of structures operating in Rojava.
Women’s Role in Rojava
The “women” theme in the message’s content is related to the fact that in Rojava, the role of women in public life and armed defense is prominently featured. One of the symbols of this approach is the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) – a military formation created as a female structure, operating parallel to YPG (People’s Protection Units) within Kurdish forces in Syria.
Criticism of Turkey’s Actions
The phrase used on the embassy fence fits into the narrative of circles critical of Turkey’s actions in northern Syria. In recent years, human rights organizations have reported incidents in which civilians were killed or injured, as well as persons performing professions protected by international law – including medical rescuers or journalists. Cases of drone attacks and shelling in areas controlled by Kurdish forces were indicated.
Turkey’s Response to Criticism
Turkey consistently rejects accusations of deliberately targeting civilians, emphasizing that its actions are directed at groups recognized by Ankara as terrorist and serve to ensure state security. The dispute over the interpretation of the situation in northern Syria – including the status and nature of Kurdish structures and armed formations – remains one of the most contentious issues in international discussions.
