On 4 November, the Holy See released its inaugural doctrinal guide on titles for Mary, approving certain appellations and warning against ambiguous ones.
Doctrine on Marian Titles
On 4 November, the Vatican issued a doctrinal note titled “Mater populi fidelis” – “Mother of the faithful people” – outlining acceptable titles for Mary.
Approved by Pope Leo XIV, the document highlights Mary’s role in the saving work and seeks to solidify Marian devotion.
Approved Marian Appellations
Three titles were authorised: “Mother of the faithful people,” “Mother of the faithful,” and “Mother Spiritual.”
These titles reflect Mary’s central participation under Christ’s guidance.
Disallowed or Restrictive Titles
Church hierarchs rejected the term “Co-Redemptrix,” previously used by Pope John Paul II, citing that “Mediator” could imply a Christ‑proper function.
Titles such as “Mother of Grace” and “Mediator of all graces” are only permissible when used with precise context, to avoid ambiguity.
Caution to the Faithful
The note warned believers against groups and publications—especially on social media—that offer improper or doubtful interpretations of Catholic dogma.
Papal Address on 5 November
In a general audience at St. Peter’s Square on 5 November, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that Christ’s resurrection provides a guiding star in a chaotic world.
He urged prayers for the dead, the fallen, those affected by armed conflict worldwide, and appealed for humanitarian aid to the people of Myanmar.
