Verdict Sent: Kwiatkowski, Bury Convicted in NIK Abuse Case

The Warsaw District Court sentenced former PSL MP Jan Bury and Civic Coalition senator Krzysztof Kwiatkowski for abuse of power in the 2013 NIK appointment scandal, handing them suspended prison terms.

Verdict for Two Politicians

Senator Krzysztof Kwiatkowski and former PSL MP Jan Bury were convicted by the Warsaw District Court for abusing authority in appointing officials to the Supreme Audit Office in 2013. Kwiatkowski received a suspended eight‑month prison sentence with a two‑year probation period; Bury was given six months suspended with the same probation term. The third accused, Paweł A., former deputy director of the NIK delegation in Rzeszów, also received a six‑month suspended sentence and a two‑year probation period. All three faced additional fines of 50,000 PLN, and Paweł A. was ordered to pay 30,000 PLN.

Court Justifies Sentences

According to the judge, Kwiatkowski acted against the public interest as NIK president, while Bury allegedly encouraged him to overstep his powers. Paweł A. was convicted for passing information to Bury. The court emphasized that their conduct undermined the authority and proper functioning of the Supreme Audit Office and threatened the private interests of candidates in statutory competitions. Judge Izabela Szumniak stated that the imposed sentences were just and fair. The verdict has not yet become final.
