Warsaw Allocates 70 Renovated Apartments to Police and Plans Metro Stations as Shelters

Warsaw has set aside 70 newly refurbished apartments for uniformed services, reserving 49 for police officers in the capital, as part of its “Warsaw Protects” safety initiative.

Police Housing Allocation

The city will provide 70 renovated homes to law‑enforcement personnel, with 49 specifically earmarked for officers assigned to the capital garrison. These accommodations aim to enhance recruitment and retention in Warsaw and strengthen community safety.

Distribution and Completion Timeline

The majority of the units are located in the Wola district, where 40 apartments are ready for occupancy and an additional five are scheduled for completion by year‑end. The municipal budget allocated approximately 1.2 million PLN for these renovations.

Apartment Features and Lease Conditions

Units range from roughly 25 to 70 m² and include studios, two‑room, and three‑room layouts. Each apartment comes with a finished bathroom and a basic kitchen; furnishings are the responsibility of the tenant. Leases run for three years with an option to renew, and apartment size is matched to the officer’s family situation.

Integration with Warsaw Protects Safety Program

Housing support is part of a wider collaboration with the Capital Police Command. Warsaw has already committed over 40 million PLN to security upgrades, including 11 million PLN last year for patrols, equipment, and unit enhancements, blending these efforts with critical infrastructure investments.

Underground Shelter Initiative

The “Underground Shield” project seeks to convert select metro stations into emergency shelters for residents. Metro authorities have been granted status changes to facilitate adaptation, with plans to provide refuge for more than 100 000 people. Station designs will include designated living areas, crisis supply storage, and essential resources, coordinated with the fire brigade and other safety agencies.
