Warsaw Christmas Market Tightens Security with Barriers and Patrols

default

Security at Warsaw’s central Christmas markets is beefed up after a 19‑year‑old law student was detained for plotting an attack, prompting more patrols and monitoring.

Enhanced Measures at Warsaw’s Central Markets

Christmas markets located beneath the Palace of Culture and Science and across the Warsaw City Wall at Barbakan have been reinforced with physical barriers and increased patrols following the arrest of a 19‑year‑old law student suspected of planning an attack.

Background of the Arrest

Police detained the student, a regular attendee of the Catholic University of Lublin, after investigators found he was communicating online with individuals linked to the so‑called “Islamic State” and discussing the possibility of targeting holiday shoppers. The court ordered a three‑month temporary detention and the university suspended his student status. The arrest was carried out by the Internal Security Agency (ABW).

Details of Security Upgrades

The Palace market is sealed with concrete barriers, monitored around the clock, and guarded by an expanded team of security, police, and municipal officers. Increased patrols focus on entrances and main pedestrian corridors. Similar arrangements apply to the Barbakan market, where the venue owner coordinates with city services to secure the site.

Instructions to Visitors

Organizers urge visitors to heed announcements, avoid blocking access, and report suspicious situations to security, the municipal guard, or police.
