Warsaw Court Deregisters Sławomir Mentzen’s New Hope Party, Wawer Foresees New Formation

On 21 November a Warsaw district court removed New Hope from the political party register, prompting Confederation treasurer Michał Wawer to warn that the group will likely register a new party.

Court Slays New Hope

The Warsaw District Court struck New Hope out of Poland’s party registry on 21 November, following a request by the State Electoral Commission (PKW). The party, headed by Sławomir Mentzen, had been operating alongside the National Movement within Confederation. The deregistration means the party loses official status and the ability to field candidates under its name.

Wawer Predicts a New Party

Confederation treasurer and MP Michał Wawer said on Radio ZET that his colleagues from New Hope will probably register a new party. He noted that the disappearance of a party from the registry is not unprecedented in Polish politics.

No Public Subsidy for New Hope

Wawer clarified that New Hope, National Movement, and Confederation are formally distinct entities; removal of Mentzen’s party affects Confederation’s metrics. He stressed that New Hope does not receive state subsidies—those are paid by Confederation—adding that he ensures all party reports are filed correctly and on time.

New Hope Politicians Reassure Continuity

In an interview with Gazeta.pl, New Hope representatives said the deregistration poses no threat. One said, “Don’t worry, we will not disappear; everything is under control.” The party plans to appeal the court’s decision and is contemplating various scenarios, including forming an entirely new party if the decree stands.

PKW Flags Financial Irregularities

PKW had previously rejected New Hope’s 2023 financial report and cited non‑compliance with legal requirements for the 2024 filings submitted by Mentzen’s group. The commission stated that New Hope violated provisions of the law concerning political organizations.
