The City of Warsaw will celebrate Warsaw Day from June 4 to 7, featuring live concerts at Castle Square, the V Mermaid Parade along the Royal Route, and sailing regattas on the Vistula River.
Commemorating the 1989 Milestone
Warsaw Day, held on June 4, commemorates the anniversary of Poland’s first partially free parliamentary elections in 1989. This year’s celebrations commence at 4:00 PM at Castle Square, focusing on the city’s unique musical and cultural heritage.
The program features the band Nicponie, known for local Warsaw hits and courtyard music, alongside performances by Michał Fogg and the Little Dancing Orchestra, which specializes in pre-war tangos and cinematic themes.
Evening Culture and Youthful Energy
The evening segment at Castle Square, titled “Warsaw Forever Young,” will host film screenings. The lineup includes the contemporary documentary “Letters from Wilcza” by Arjun Talwar and Andrzej Wajda’s classic “Innocent Sorcerers,” concluding the inaugural day’s program at 10:00 PM.
Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski has invited all residents to join the festivities, emphasizing the diverse array of events prepared throughout the capital to honor the city’s identity.
The Fifth Mermaid Parade
A central feature of the celebration is the V Mermaid Parade scheduled for Saturday, June 6. At 1:00 PM, a colorful procession featuring dancers, performers, and orchestras will depart from de Gaulle’s Roundabout.
The parade will move along the Royal Route, including Nowy Świat and Krakowskie Przedmieście, culminating at Castle Square. Twenty individual Mermaids, representing various city districts, will participate, followed by a headline concert featuring Roxie.
Regattas and Riverfront Festivities
The Vistula River will host the President of Warsaw’s Cup Regatta on June 6 and 7. Over 20 crews will compete in various yacht classes, including the classic Omega boats, which were originally designed in Warsaw 80 years ago.
In addition to the sailing races, a nautical town will be established for residents, offering workshops and family activities. On Saturday evening, a parade of colorful sails will take place, highlighting the city’s deep connection to the river as noted by Tomasz Holc, President of the Polish Yachting Association.
