Warsaw Initiates Talks on Permanent US Military Presence

Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski has been authorized to propose the establishment of a permanent American military base in Poland to Pentagon officials, marking a potential shift from current rotational deployments.

Negotiating a permanent shift

Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski confirmed he has been authorized by Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz to propose a transition from rotational deployments to a permanent US military presence in Poland. While US troops currently serve in Poland on a rotational basis, this new proposal aims for a more enduring commitment, a step the Pentagon has now agreed to discuss.

Proposed infrastructure and investment

Poland’s proposal entails the construction of a military base designed to function as a “small town” capable of hosting soldiers and their families. Zalewski emphasized that this plan represents a significant, long-term commitment from the Polish government to invest in necessary infrastructure, noting that the presence of families would involve several thousand people.

Strategic deterrence and logistics

The ministry views a permanent base as a vital mechanism for deterring Russian aggression and ensuring national security. By moving away from the temporary nature of rotational deployments, where soldiers often operate in field conditions, Poland seeks a more stable and difficult-to-withdraw defensive posture.

Context of US troop deployments

The announcement follows recent uncertainty regarding the US military footprint on NATO’s eastern flank, including reports of canceled troop rotations and the withdrawal of forces from Germany. Separately, Donald Trump previously announced the potential deployment of 5,000 additional US troops to Poland, though the current government maintains that formal negotiations regarding long-term structural changes remain ongoing.
