Warsaw police have arrested a 36-year-old man linked to a fraud targeting an 83-year-old woman, resulting in losses of approximately €22,000.
Fraud Scheme Targeting Elderly Woman Uncovered
Police in Warsaw’s Śródmieście district have arrested a second man involved in defrauding an 83-year-old woman of 100,000 złoty (approximately €22,000). The 36-year-old suspect acted in concert with a 42-year-old previously apprehended in connection with the case.
The pair intentionally misled the elderly woman, who subsequently handed over money and jewelry. Police successfully intervened to prevent further losses.
“Legend” Method Used in Scam
Officers from the Property Crime Division of the Śródmieście command disrupted a fraud targeting the 83-year-old victim using the “legend” method. Operational activities led investigators to Warsaw’s Włochy district, where a resident had been similarly manipulated.
The fraudsters gained the victim’s trust by posing as police officers, convincing her to hand over funds and valuables under the guise of a special operation.
Second Suspect Apprehended After Attempted Escape
The following day, the scammers contacted the victim again to collect additional money and valuables. Unaware she was being defrauded, the woman was nearly victimized again.
Police, anticipating the attempt, waited for the accomplice at a location on Fasolowa Street. When officers moved to make the arrest, the 42-year-old attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended and handcuffed.
Further Investigation Leads to Second Arrest
The investigation continued, leading to the identification and arrest of the 36-year-old accomplice in Zakręt, a town near Warsaw. He was surprised by the police visit and attempted to escape but was quickly subdued and handcuffed.
Both Suspects Face Jail Time
Both the 36-year-old and the 42-year-old have been charged with fraud and, at the prosecutor’s request, will remain in custody for the next three months. Each suspect faces up to eight years in prison.
Investigation Ongoing
The case is being supervised by the Warsaw Ochota District Prosecutor’s Office.
Safety Reminders
Authorities remind the public to be vigilant and aware of common fraud tactics.
