Four men were arrested in Warsaw after attempting to collect fraudulently obtained phones worth over 30,000 złoty for a telecom company.
Fraudulent Scheme Uncovered
Four men have been charged with attempted fraud for their involvement in a scheme to defraud a telecommunications company. They were apprehended by Warsaw’s Economic Crime Department while attempting to pick up a shipment of phones obtained through fraudulent means.
Police determined that a man known for defrauding telecom companies had placed another order using the details of legitimate businesses, securing telecom service contracts via phone. The company then shipped four mobile phones, valued at over 30,000 złoty, to an address provided by the 39-year-old.
Courier Delivery Ruse
Investigators discovered that despite being shipped to a business address, the courier was instructed to deliver the packages to a different location specified during a phone call with the purported company owner. Police surveilled the location where the courier left the packages.
A 44-year-old man was observed collecting the packages at the courier’s drop-off point, stating he was asked to pick them up by an acquaintance and was then informed of the final delivery location. He shared this information with the police, who then arrested a 50-year-old waiting for the shipment, and another individual observing from a nearby overpass.
“Mules” and Organizer Identified
The arrested individuals were identified as “mules” operating on behalf of a 33-year-old who organized the phone collection at the behest of the scheme’s initiator. The organizer allegedly promised the mules 1,000 złoty for their involvement.
Significant Financial Losses
The telecommunications company reported attempted fraud totaling over 30,000 złoty, as well as a separate attempt using another company’s data, valued at over 26,000 złoty. The total potential loss exceeds 56,000 złoty.
Ongoing Investigation
The Warsaw I District Police Department’s investigative unit is handling the case. The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are possible.
The case is under the supervision of the Warsaw Śródmieście District Prosecutor’s Office.
