Extensive repairs to Warsaw’s S8 route between Powązkowska and Marki will begin April 15th, conducted nightly to minimize disruption until late 2026.
S8 Route Repairs Commencing
Major renovation work on a section of the S8 route in Warsaw will begin in the night of Wednesday to Thursday, April 15th-16th. The General Directorate for National Roads and Highways (GDDKiA) reports that the work will cover the section between the Powązkowska and Marki interchanges, starting with the stretch between Łabiszyńska and Marki.
The repairs will be carried out in stages and exclusively at night, between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM, to limit traffic disruptions on one of the busiest routes in the capital and the country.
Initial Phase: Lane Closures Towards Białystok
Initially, the left lane of the main carriageway towards Białystok will be closed on the section from Łabiszyńska to Marki. After completion of this section, work will move to the left lane in the opposite direction.
Work will then return to the Białystok-bound side, where the right lane will be renovated. Subsequent stages will follow a similar pattern.
Scope of Work and Speed Restrictions
The work will be performed on sections ranging from 600 to 1000 meters in length. It includes milling the old surface, laying a new wearing course, and applying road markings.
A speed limit of 60 km/h will be in effect on the renovated sections.
Project Timeline and Future Updates
According to GDDKiA, this phase of the renovation is expected to be completed by the end of June 2026, weather permitting. The Directorate will provide updates on subsequent stages covering the remaining section between Powązkowska and Łabiszyńska.
Traffic Organization Changes to Enhance Safety
The road surface renovation is linked to previously announced changes in traffic organization, intended to improve safety, reduce collision points, and streamline traffic on the most congested section of the Warsaw Road Junction.
Specific Changes at Powązkowska and Modlińska Interchanges
Planned changes include the elimination of the emergency lane at the Powązkowska interchange towards Białystok (approximately 400 meters) and on the main S8 carriageway between Słowackiego and Gwiaździsta streets (approximately 700 meters towards Białystok and 900 meters towards Poznań).
Changes also affect the Modlińska interchange, with two through lanes being introduced on the collector-distributor road towards Poznań. Simultaneously, the connector from Białołęki, directing traffic to the Grota-Rowecki Bridge, will be narrowed from two to one lane. These changes will be implemented incrementally with the progress of the road works.
Route History and Traffic Volume
GDDKiA recalls that the S8 route between the Powązkowska and Marki interchanges was expanded in stages, with the section from Modlińska to Marki opening in 2012 and the section between Powązkowska and Modlińska in 2015. This means that part of this route has been in use for over 11 years.
Intensive Use Drives Maintenance Needs
Intensive use is cited as the main reason for the commencement of further maintenance work. According to GDDKiA data, an average of 140,000 to 185,000 vehicles, including 9,000 to 14,000 trucks, travel on this section of the S8 route daily.
Replacing the wearing course is intended to extend the durability of the surface and maintain the usability of one of the key transport corridors in the Warsaw agglomeration.
