Warsaw’s city council will launch a 2026 overhaul of downtown, improving station access, removing informal kiosks, and adding greenery near the Palace of Culture and Science.
2026 Central District Vision
Warsaw’s city council has earmarked the year 2026 to overhaul several downtown corridors, including Złotej and Zgoda, the area around the Palace of Culture and Science, and the passage of Wisławy Szymborskiej. The aim is to improve station access, regulate informal kiosks, and increase green coverage.
Złotej–Zgoda Quarter Renewal
The reconstruction of the Złotej–Zgoda quarter is already underway. It will replace the current concrete spine with a green, pedestrian‑friendly space featuring woonerfs, new tree plantings, and low‑lying vegetation. Traffic and parking are being curtailed to prioritise foot passengers and public‑transport users.
Recent weeks saw the planting of large trees that will complete the green corridor through the downtown core.
Grzybowy–Twarda Corridor Modernization
Funding has been allocated for the 2026 upgrade of the Grzybowy Square to Twarda Street stretch between Królewska and Emilia Plater. The changes go beyond simple asphalt renewal, targeting sidewalk improvement, street cross‑section, and the addition of greenery.
Developers of the Puro hotel and a 30‑storey apartment block on Twarda and Mariańska are set to co‑finance parts of the work.
Green Enhancements around the Palace of Culture
The city intends to conduct smaller, rail‑independent works around the Palace of Culture and Science, improving access to Warsaw Central and Central Station, introducing low‑lying greenery, and organising the surrounding areas.
Planned activities include removing a number of unsanctioned food kiosks and resurfacing the passage of Wisława Szymborska, which currently presents a challenge for travelers with luggage or wheelchairs.
Budgetary Allocation & Future Timelines
A financial plan for 2026–2030 allocates a record 16.9 billion PLN to city‑centre projects, covering the New Warsaw Center programme, cultural infrastructure, public transport, and sports facilities.
Exact schedules for works at Grzybowy Square, Jerozolimskie Avenues, and Wisława Szymborska will be clarified after detailed concepts are produced. Residents can expect mainly design work and early green planting around the Palace of Culture beginning in 2026.
