A 50-year-old taxi driver in Warsaw led police on a chase through city streets after initially stopping for a routine sobriety check on April 25th.
Routine Check Turns into Pursuit
On Saturday, April 25th, a police chase unfolded in Warsaw’s Śródmieście district during a morning sobriety checkpoint on al. Armii Ludowej.
The incident began around 5:50 AM when officers from the Warsaw Police Traffic Department stopped a Renault taxi for a routine check.
Driver Attempts to Flee
Initial reports indicate the driver initially complied with the stop. However, as officers approached the vehicle, he suddenly accelerated and attempted to flee.
One officer attempted to grab the car door handle, while others pursued in patrol cars.
Chase Through Warsaw
Despite flashing lights and sirens, the driver disregarded police commands to stop, continuing the chase across Łazienkowski Bridge.
He collided with energy-absorbing barriers while exiting onto Wał Miedzeszyński, but continued driving despite the damage.
Arrest and Charges
The pursuit concluded around 6:00 AM on al. Becka, near al. Polski Walczącej in Mokotów, where the driver was apprehended.
A breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol content of approximately 0.5 per mille. The 50-year-old Polish citizen faces charges for failing to stop for a traffic control and driving under the influence.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. Police are continuing to investigate.
