Warsaw Tram Line Reconstruction Begins, Disrupting Traffic

Warsaw Tramways initiated reconstruction of the tramline at the intersection of Grzybowska and Towarowa on April 11th, causing disruptions for passengers and drivers for approximately six weeks.

Tramway Reconstruction and Route Changes

Warsaw Tramways began rebuilding the tram passage through the track intersection at Grzybowska and Towarowa, including the Warsaw Uprising Museum stops, on Saturday, April 11th. The work is coordinated with the reconstruction of Grzybowska Street, managed by the Capital City Road Development Administration.

Tram services will operate on altered routes for a period of one and a half months. This year’s repair plan includes 36 tasks and nearly 12.5 km of single track – the most extensive in years.

Coordination with Roadworks

The tramway reconstruction at the intersection of Towarowa and Grzybowska began on April 11th and will last approximately six weeks. The timing and scope of the work were coordinated with the Capital City Road Development Administration (SZRM), which has been rebuilding Grzybowska Street since last year.

Both the track and road work are being carried out by the same contractor, Strabag. The last major repair of the track in this location was in 2001.

Modernization Details

The current modernization involves replacing the existing track structure with a slab track, constructing drainage, replacing surfaces at pedestrian crossings, and upgrading the tram passage. The stops near the Warsaw Uprising Museum will also be completely renovated.

Temporary Route Adjustments – First Phase

During the weekend of April 11-12, Warsaw Tramways will install a temporary slip switch near the Daszyńskiego Roundabout. Connecting the switch will require suspending tram traffic on a longer section of Towarowa Street – between Okopowa and Plac Zawiszy stops.

Temporary Route Adjustments – Second Phase

From Monday, April 13th, thanks to the slip switch, trams traveling from Ochota and the City Center will reach the Daszyńskiego Roundabout via Plac Zawiszy, where they will turn around. This will maintain access to the office district and connections to metro line M2. Line 1 will return, but on a shorter route, from P+R Al. Krakowska to the Daszyńskiego Roundabout.

Tram line 27 will remain suspended, while lines 22, 71, 24, and 72 will operate unchanged. A supplementary tram line 74 will be launched from Wiatraczna Roundabout to Daszyńskiego Roundabout, following part of line 24’s route. The Z-1 route will also be slightly modified, with buses running from the Esperanto loop to Daszyńskiego Roundabout.

Impact on Drivers

Drivers should also prepare for changes in traffic flow. From Saturday, April 11th, the crossing over the tracks at the intersection with Grzybowska will be closed. Vehicles exiting Grzybowska Street in both directions will turn right and loop around at Chłodna Street or the Daszyńskiego Roundabout.

The intersection of Towarowa Street will also be narrower, with the left lanes of both carriageways cordoned off, reducing traffic to two lanes in each direction.

Future Plans and Further Work

The disruption on Towarowa Street is expected to last until the end of May. The work will result in modern and comfortable tram stops. Coordination with SZRM will ensure drivers benefit from a smooth and even road surface on the entire Grzybowska Street after the roadworks are completed.

Plans are in place to renovate the tracks along the entire Towarowa Street – from Okopowa to Plac Zawiszy, expand the track layout at the Daszyńskiego Roundabout, and build slip switches for turning two-way trams before Plac Zawiszy. These works are planned for 2027, before the planned closure and renovation of the viaducts at Plac Zawiszy.

From April 27th to May 3rd, Warsaw Tramways, together with SZRM, will begin work at Plac Narutowicza, including track repairs and renovation of one of the stops.

Upcoming Major Repairs

In the coming months, tramway workers will begin the largest and most challenging repairs of the year, moving to the Jerozolimskie Avenue and Poniatowski Bridge. This includes replacing rail equalizers on the viaduct, replacing rails, and rebuilding the track structure on the section from the Washington Roundabout to Plac Starynkiewicza.

Other major repairs planned for this year include work on various sections of the tram network.
