Warsaw University Murder Investigation Closed; Suspect to be Hospitalized

Prosecutors have requested the closure of the investigation into a murder at the University of Warsaw and the suspect’s placement in a psychiatric facility.

Investigation Closed, Psychiatric Hospitalization Sought

A motion to terminate proceedings and apply a security measure of placement in a psychiatric hospital was submitted today to the Warsaw District Court regarding Mieszko R., suspected of murder.

The prosecutor’s decision stems from an analysis of psychiatric expert opinions obtained after weeks of observation in a closed facility, concluding the suspect was legally insane at the time of the alleged acts.

Psychiatric Evaluation Details

A forensic psychiatric-psychological assessment dated January 12, 2026, diagnosed the suspect with a psychotic mental disorder. The prohibited acts were attributed to a combination of personality traits and a developed psychosis, including impaired reality assessment and a sense of higher necessity.

Concerns Regarding Treatment and Motivation

Supplementary opinions, prompted by objections from the victims’ representatives, indicated a heightened, multifaceted risk of future problems. Experts noted a potential for instrumental engagement with therapy, focused on shortening isolation, suggesting low intrinsic motivation for treatment.

Experts also cautioned that declared cooperation might be superficial and aimed at securing release while maintaining significant risk factors for similar future acts.

No Referral to Dissocial Behavior Center

Contrary to media reports, the prosecution’s motion does not include placement in the National Center for the Prevention of Dissocial Behavior. Such placement is currently only possible for individuals who have previously served lengthy prison sentences.

Due to the diagnosed insanity, assigning criminal guilt and sentencing is impossible. Experts clarified that the reference to the National Center in Gostynin was functional, representing a model for interventions for individuals with the highest risk level.

Indeterminate Hospital Stay

If the court approves the security measure, the duration of the suspect’s stay in a psychiatric hospital is not predetermined. This means Mieszko R. may never be released.
