Warsaw’s Rondo Dmowskiego Square to Become Green

The Warsaw Public Areas Management has announced a tender to transform the square near Rondo Dmowskiego into a green space with trees, shrubs, and pedestrian paths.

Green Space Transformation

A new green space will emerge in Warsaw’s New Center, located near Rondo Dmowskiego between the former Cepelia pavilion and the Metropol hotel. The project will feature numerous trees, shrubs, and green islands, replacing the current concrete-dominated area. Planners also envision new granite-lined pathways and seating areas.

The initiative is part of efforts to revitalize the city center into a sustainable, accessible space for gatherings, strolls, and relaxation. Similar projects have introduced new pedestrian crossings, parks, and squares across the area.

Project Details

No public parking spaces will be removed, as the existing parking lot near the Metropol hotel is not open to the public. The greenery will include 10 planted islands featuring 29 trees (19 hornbeams and 10 small-leaved lindens), 55 solitary shrubs (e.g., bird cherry and common spindle), and additional perennials, shrubs like cherry laurel, and climbing plants like ivy.

A space for a garden café will be placed near the hotel entrance, and three islands closest to the roundabout will feature LED ground-level lighting. The design also allows for potential placement of a small sculpture between the islands.

Tender Process

The Public Areas Management has launched a tender for construction works. Interested firms can submit bids by March 6. After evaluating offers, the most advantageous bidder will be selected. The selected contractor will have 150 days from the contract signing to complete the greening work.

Environmental Benefits

Each New Center investment prioritizes greenery. Increased vegetation improves air quality and reduces temperatures during heatwaves. Similar transformations on streets like Chmielna (90 new trees, 32 solitary shrubs, 7,500+ shrubs) and Bracka (33 new trees, converted into a plant-filled pedestrian zone) have enhanced urban living.

Greening projects have also improved aesthetics at Pięciu Rogów Square (29 trees), Central Square near the Palace of Culture and Science (102 trees, 81,000+ bulb plants), and Rondo Dmowskiego itself (20,000+ shrubs/perennials, 54 trees across 6,600 sqm).
