Following remarks by J.D. Vance regarding potential U.S. action against Iran, the White House swiftly dismissed suggestions of nuclear weapon use.
Vance’s Remarks and White House Response
J.D. Vance made his comments on Tuesday, April 7th, while in Budapest. The campaign account for Kamala Harris on X responded, accusing Vance of implying the U.S. might use nuclear weapons against Iran.
The White House’s “Rapid Response” account on X, Rapid Response 47, stated: “Literally nothing VP said here ‘suggests’ this (using nuclear weapons in Iran), you finished fools.”
Trump’s and Vance’s Statements on Potential Targets
On Monday, Donald Trump was asked if he could rule out strikes on hospitals or schools, but did not provide a definitive answer. He stated that “only a few options are off the table.”
Trump indicated he has a plan to destroy all bridges and power plants in Iran within four hours, noting Iran has one nuclear power plant.
Ultimatum and Iranian Response
Vance stated in Budapest that he expects a response from Iran – positive or negative – before the deadline of 2 a.m. Polish time.
Iran Distributes Iodine Tablets
Iranian health authorities have distributed 180,000 iodine tablets to residents of Bushehr, where Iran’s only nuclear power plant is located, as part of a crisis preparedness plan.
The distribution began at the nuclear power plant and was then extended to the entire city, according to the State Young Journalists Club (YJC).
Authorities recommend taking the tablets 24 hours before and up to four hours after potential radiation exposure, with one tablet per person, dosage varying by age.
The tablets are intended for use in the event of a radiological incident, protecting the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine.
Past Discussions of Nuclear Options
Reports have surfaced that Trump previously considered using nuclear weapons against North Korea in 2017, discussing the possibility with his staff and suggesting blaming another country for an attack.
Some commentators have also suggested the U.S. administration might be considering nuclear weapons against Iran, with reports that Trump advisors discussed a potential nuclear strike carried out by Israel.
