Donald Trump claims only the US can guarantee global peace through force as tensions escalate with the EU over Greenland and other issues.
Trump’s Peace Promises
“The United States is the only power that can guarantee peace in the world – and it will do so, to put it plainly, by using force.” With these words, Donald Trump embarked this week for Davos, where his talks with the heads of governments of European countries were scheduled to take place during the World Economic Forum.
Mixed Messages on Peace
About peace, Trump spoke this week – as usual – a lot. On one hand, in a letter to the Prime Minister of Norway, he announced that after the Nobel Committee did not award him the Peace Prize, now “peace will bother him less.” On the other hand, he sent invitations to participate in his “Peace Council” to almost every world politician and politician he found in his address book – from Erdogan through von der Leyen, to Putin.
European Frustration Mounts
Meanwhile, Europeans are sending signals that they are losing patience with Trump, and the affair over Greenland is the straw that broke the camel’s back – and a step from which there is no way back to the status quo. The thing is that we heard such fiery promises several times over the past year, and in the end, the tactic of appeasing Trump always won out.
Transatlantic Relations at a Crossroads
This week in “What’s going to happen” we discuss how it will be this time – and when the transatlantic bridge will actually be set on fire irreversibly.
