A small Shih Tzu named Maja was killed by wild boars on April 12th in Brwinów, Poland, prompting concerns about increasing wildlife encounters.
Wild Boar Attack in Brwinów
On Sunday, April 12th, a dramatic incident involving wild boars occurred in Brwinów, near Warsaw, Poland. A dog owner walking her small Shih Tzu was attacked by a herd of wild boars, resulting in the dog’s death.
The dog, named Maja, was on a leash and reportedly not behaving aggressively when three wild boars attacked. The animals breached wooden fences during the swift attack.
Police Investigation and Resident Concerns
Police confirmed the incident, which has raised alarm among residents, as similar encounters have been reported in the area.
Previous Incidents and Wildlife Presence
Residents report that the same group of wild boars – two sows and 18 young – had previously entered a property in Brwinów, damaging a fence and chasing a dog. A passerby intervened to scare the animals away.
In June 2024, the Brwinów Municipal Guard received numerous reports of a wild boar herd appearing in the southern part of the city, including streets like Kościuszki, Kraszewskiego, Wilsona, and Pruszkowska. Attempts were made to deter the animals using lights and sounds, and residents were reminded to keep dogs on leashes.
Legal Framework and Municipal Limitations
The incident highlights the ongoing problem of wild boars in populated areas of Brwinów, raising concerns about the safety of pets and residents. According to Polish law, municipalities have limited authority regarding wildlife management.
Polish hunting law designates wild animals as state property. Removing or controlling them requires authorization from the Provincial Governor or the District Starost (head of the district), in coordination with the Polish Hunting Association. Municipalities cannot independently authorize the culling of wild boars.
Gmina Brwinów’s Actions and Future Plans
In 2025, the Gmina Brwinów requested permission from the District Starost for a reduction cull of 30 wild boars, citing threats to public safety and infrastructure. The Starost approved the cull, which was carried out between September 1st and December 9th, 2025, resulting in the removal of 16 wild boars.
Following a mild winter and increased food availability, wild boars have reappeared in populated areas. The Gmina Brwinów has again requested a reduction cull for 2026, with a decision received in late April 2026. The cull will be commissioned after completing public procurement procedures.
