Polish authorities confirmed a wild cat, possibly a puma or cheetah, near Koszalin, urging residents to exercise caution.
Wild Cat Spotted in Forest Areas
Będzino Municipality (West Pomeranian Voivodeship) announced on January 29 that a wild cat, possibly a puma or cheetah, was confirmed in the forest complex in Strachomino (toward Wierzchomino), as well as in the Natura 2000 area – Warnie Bagno. Due to the potential threat, authorities are advising against entering the forest and are urging special caution near these wooded areas. Residents are also being asked not to release domestic animals into nearby areas without supervision.
Guidelines for Animal Encounters
Municipality representatives have advised that if the “wild cat” is encountered, people should not approach it, attempt to photograph it, or try to scare it. “Any information about the animal’s location should be immediately reported to 112 or to the appropriate forest district,” authorities stated. “The situation is being monitored by the relevant services. We will provide updates on further actions as they happen.”
Proper Response to Wildlife
Anna Choszcz-Sendrowska, press spokeswoman for the State Forests, emphasized that the responsibility of actions taken is key when encountering a wild animal. She noted that such animals are primarily guided by instinct and defensive mechanisms.
“As a rule, we should not interfere with wild animals, deliberately provoke them, or maintain close proximity, regardless of the species we encounter,” Choszcz-Sendrowska explained. “In case of a close encounter with a potentially dangerous animal that doesn’t flee from us from close range, approaches us, or allows us to approach (mainly signs of habituation or illness), one must remain calm and exercise special caution. We should not intervene ourselves, and even more so, we should not remove such an animal from the forest without an expert opinion (e.g., a veterinarian). We should call the appropriate authorities or contact the nearest animal rehabilitation center.”
