Will Orbán Face Imprisonment After Election? Magyar: Courts Will Decide

Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar stated that independent courts would determine the fate of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán should he be found liable after elections.

Magyar on Potential Orbán Prosecution

Opposition leader Péter Magyar, in an interview published Saturday in the daily “Nepszava,” assured that under his rule, independent courts would issue verdicts. When asked about expectations regarding the conviction of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, he responded that holding him accountable would not be the role of the new government’s prime minister.

“Holding the leader of another party accountable is not the task of Péter Magyar, the prime minister, or any other party leader,” Magyar emphasized, responding to a question from “Nepszava” about the expectations of a significant portion of his voters regarding Orbán’s imprisonment.

Role of the Government and Judiciary

“The government’s task is to create a framework for an independent judiciary and a professionally functioning investigative body. If they function, then they will decide who committed what crime and issue verdicts,” Magyar underscored.

Tisza’s Government Structure and Priorities

The opposition leader admitted that his party already has candidates for the heads of each ministry and a draft of the government structure. He revealed that his cabinet would include ministries of health, education, rural development, environment, and finance. EU affairs, he added, would likely fall directly under the prime minister’s office.

International Relations and Energy Policy

The Tisza leader also commented on international issues, emphasizing that despite the open support of Orbán by the administration of President Donald Trump, Tisza would like to maintain a “constructive partnership with the USA.”

He also assured that he does not rule out negotiations on the supply of energy resources with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Magyar criticized the Orbán government for the lack of diversification of oil and gas supplies, emphasizing that this process is necessary, although it will not be finalized overnight. “If necessary, we will negotiate (with Russia), which does not mean we will become friends,” he stressed.

Upcoming Elections and Polling Data

Parliamentary elections in Hungary will be held on Sunday.

In recent weeks before the vote, most independent polls have shown support for Tisza at between 49 and 58 percent among determined voters, with support for Fidesz of Prime Minister Orbán ranging between 35 and 38 percent. Opinion polls have also shown growing support for the opposition and a decline in the popularity of the ruling party.

Polls from centers associated with the government, however, show a Fidesz lead of several percentage points.
