Will West Rely on Itself in Russia’s War? NATO Expert Warns of Trap

In a Gazeta.pl podcast, think‑tank analyst Albert Świdziński warned that Western support for Ukraine is limited and could be a trap for Poland if Russia attacks, saying allies may pressure Warsaw to restrain its response.

Western stance on war in Ukraine

In the program “Tonie takie proste,” Świdziński explained how Western states have responded to the conflict. He cited Germany’s reaction to a Ukrainian ambassador’s plea for assistance, noting the ambassador reportedly felt “German humanitarianism” was evident. The German officials told him that since Ukraine has the opportunity to defend itself, there is little sense in helping, lest it merely prolong suffering.

Russia-Poland war would also be limited

Świdziński argued that the war in Ukraine has a “limited character” for the West. He added that for any country west of Russia, a potential conflict between Russia and Poland would likewise be constrained. The analyst would be cautious about the scale of such a confrontation.

Poland’s position similar to Ukraine

During the interview, Grzegorz Sroczyński asked whether Poland would find itself in the same position as Ukraine if a conflict were to move onto Polish territory. According to Świdziński, Poland would have to rely largely on itself rather than expect swift support from allies.

The NATO trap

Świdziński warned that Poland’s NATO membership brings a “trap.” In a formal alliance, partner states may pressure Warsaw to keep its reaction from being excessive, fearing the dynamics of a controlled conflict might drag them into war. This cautious posture reflects the allies’ reluctance to become fully involved.
