Wind and Solar Surpass Fossil Fuels in EU; Poland Lags Behind

Wind and solar power generated more electricity than fossil fuels in the EU for the first time in 2025.

Historic Shift in EU Energy Production

2025 was the first year in history when this happened – according to the “European Electricity Review 2026” report by the Ember think tank, which premieres on January 22. This was possible despite a slight increase in electricity production, which reached 1331 TWh, 0.4% more than the previous year. Sun and wind accounted for 30.1% of production, while fossil fuels accounted for 29%. In 2020, these values were 19.7% and 36.7%, respectively.

Poland Falls Behind in Renewable Energy Adoption

Wind and solar power surpassed coal, gas, and other fossil fuels in 14 of the 27 EU countries. Poland is not among them; in our energy mix, the dominance of fossil fuels over sun and wind is almost 44 percentage points (wind and solar energy accounts for 25%, fossil fuels 68.9%).

Expert Commentary on the Energy Transition

This is a breakthrough moment. The EU is clearly moving toward an energy system based on wind and sun. This is especially important now, when dependence on fossil fuels fuels global instability – comments the report’s author, Beatrice Petrovich.
