Wkra River Overflows, Properties and Streets Flooded as Firefighters Battle Nature

On Thursday, February 26, after 14:00, water levels in the Wkra river exceeded alarm thresholds, threatening properties in Nowodworski county.

Flooding Exceeds Alarm Levels

On Thursday, February 26 after 14:00, the water level in the Wkra river in Nowodworski county – on the section between Borkowo and Błędowo, in the municipalities of Nasielsk and Pomiechówek – exceeded alarm levels and began to pose a real threat to nearby properties.

24 Properties Flooded, One Being Defended

Flood situation reports mainly concerned properties located directly adjacent to the river. According to information from the scene, 24 properties are currently flooded. These are mostly seasonal residences, mainly summer cottages. Simultaneously, one property is still being defended against water – firefighters are securing it with sand bags prepared on site. Many local access roads to properties are currently flooded.

Firefighters Deployed with Special Equipment

A total of 13 fire brigades were deployed – both State Fire Service units and local OSP units. The operation is being conducted in difficult terrain, so two quads are also being used. A drone is also participating in the operation, illuminating the area, facilitating firefighters’ work during property protection and reconnaissance of flooded areas.

Ice Jam Identified as Main Cause

The main cause of the deteriorating situation is recognized as an ice jam that formed in the Błędowo area (Pomiechówek municipality). This is causing water accumulation and rising river levels on the specified section. The commander of the State Fire Service in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki is on site along with his deputy, as well as officials responsible for crisis management from the Pomiechówek and Nasielsk municipalities.

Rising Temperatures Worsen Situation

In the coming days, the situation is expected to remain dynamic. Rising temperatures may affect the course of events. Today in Warsaw, 6.1°C was already recorded, and according to forecasts, on Saturday, February 28, air temperatures could reach around +15°C with strong sunshine, which does not favor stabilization of conditions in the ice jam area. Services’ activities are currently focused on securing threatened areas, limiting the effects of flooding, and protecting properties from further water inflow.
