Wolf Enters Private Property and Approaches Child in Jabłonka

On Saturday, June 6, in the village of Jabłonka, a wolf entered a private residence and moved toward a child, prompting a defensive response from a guardian and a dog.

Incident in the Brzozów District

The wolf breached the perimeter of a private property in the village of Jabłonka, Dydnia municipality. According to Senior Aspirant Joanna Baranowska, press officer for the Brzozów police, the animal moved toward a child before being driven off by a guardian and a dog; the wolf then seized the dog and fled toward the forest.

The police are investigating the incident, and both the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection and the mayor of Dydnia have been notified. Reports indicate this is another instance of a predator entering human-populated areas in the region.

Human-Wolf Interactions

Experts emphasize that wolves are naturally fearful of humans and typically flee from encounters. Risks to humans are rare, usually limited to instances where wolves have been raised in captivity or are hybrids resulting from interbreeding with domestic dogs.

Environmentalists consistently advise securing livestock and domestic animals through the use of fencing, electric shepherds, and guard dogs to prevent conflicts.

Safety Guidelines for Encounters

Wolves generally avoid frequented areas like marked trails, which are considered relatively safe. Caution is advised when venturing off-path or near potential dens, especially during the spring breeding season from March to June.

If encountering a female with pups, retreat slowly without turning your back or making sudden moves. Approaching pups is strictly forbidden, as the mother will likely attack to defend her offspring.

If a wolf stares at you, avoid panicking; this is often a biological necessity, as wolves have poor eyesight and require time to identify unfamiliar objects. If faced with a pack, stand still; the animals possess a keen sense of smell and will typically leave once they detect a human presence.
