Woman and Three Children Found Dead in Chełmno Home

On Thursday, a woman reported missing relatives to police in Chełmno, Poland; officers discovered four bodies and high levels of carbon monoxide in the home.

Woman Reported Missing Relatives

On Thursday (January 15) around 17:00, a woman went to the police in Chełmno (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship) “concerned about the lack of contact with a relative and the absence of her children from school since the beginning of the week.”

The patrol sent to the location almost immediately detected an intense gas odor upon entering the building and called the fire department. Even before entering the apartment, measuring devices showed very high levels of carbon monoxide.

Bodies of Four Discovered

Upon entering the apartment, bodies of four persons were discovered. The victims were a 31-year-old woman and her three children, aged 3, 11, and 12.

Measurements showed that the carbon monoxide concentration exceeded 900 ppm, according to Capt. Eng. Kasper Korczak from the County Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Chełmno.

Carbon Monoxide Information

Carbon monoxide is a highly toxic, colorless and odorless gas, slightly lighter than air, which causes it to mix easily with air and spread in it.

Potential sources of carbon monoxide in residential premises include fireplaces, gas water heaters, coal, gas or oil stoves, and gas kitchens, as explained by the fire department.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide poisoning has specific symptoms that people should be aware of to recognize potential danger.

Immediate action is required when carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected to prevent further harm.
