Body of 70-year-old woman found at Pabianice train station on February 8; autopsy reveals she died after being hit by train while retrieving forgotten luggage.
Woman’s Body Found at Pabianice Station
Police at 8:30 AM on February 8 received information that a woman’s body was located at the PKP train station on Łaska Street in Pabianice (Łódzkie Voivodeship). According to investigators, the 70-year-old woman was lying under a PKP Intercity train traveling from Wrocław to Białystok, and according to “Dziennik Łódzki” between the locomotive and a concrete platform wall.
The deceased had planned to take the Zakopane-Świnoujście train, which had arrived at the station several hours earlier and departed with her luggage. “During the examination, it was established that the 70-year-old woman had partial amputation of her left leg, and these injuries could have occurred while she was still alive,” reported Paweł Jasiak, a spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Łódź.
Autopsy Reveals New Facts
Investigators did not rule out that third parties could have caused the woman’s death, which is why an autopsy was ordered, which took place on Friday, February 13. Journalists from “Fakt” obtained its results. They indicate that the woman likely died from bleeding, which was caused by a large wound resulting from partial loss of her leg. Additionally, she had a crushed pelvis. According to “Fakt”, these injuries occurred when she fell onto the tracks as the Zakopane-Świnoujście train was departing.
The elderly woman had no other injuries. Nothing suggests she was run over by any other train,” reported prosecutor Emilia Michałowska-Marchewa from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Łódź in an interview with “Fakt”.
What Happened?
According to journalists, the 70-year-old woman had two pieces of luggage and may have boarded the train, forgetting one of them, after which she returned to get it. At some point, however, an accident occurred. According to “Fakt” reports, the conductor learned about the situation from one of the passengers who witnessed the incident, and then reported it to the driver. He was supposed to notify the Railway Protection Service, which checked the underside of the train at Łódź-Kaliska station.
However, employees did not notice any signs of being hit, so the train continued on its way. The District Prosecutor’s Office in Pabianice on February 10 initiated an investigation into unintentional causing of death. Investigators are still examining the circumstances of the accident. Surveillance recordings, which will be analyzed, may be helpful in this. “The process of establishing whether the train crew received information about the incident involving a passenger, as well as what measures were taken in this regard, is also ongoing,” reported the prosecutor’s spokesperson.
