Woman Dies in Opalenica CO₂ Poisoning; Rescuers Hospitalized

A 44‑year‑old woman in Opalenica died from carbon‑monoxide poisoning on December 24; two rescuers later admitted to hospital with suspected CO exposure.

Fatal CO Poisoning

On Wednesday, December 24 around 16:10, emergency services received a call about a 44‑year‑old resident of Opalenica whose circulation suddenly stopped. Medical responders found evidence of carbon‑monoxide in the building. She was transported to New Tomysl County Hospital but could not be revived. The cause of death was determined to be CO poisoning.

Rescuers Admitted

Two rescuers involved in the operation reported feeling unwell with symptoms consistent with CO exposure and were taken to Hospital in Grodzisk Wielkopolski. They were later transferred to a specialized medical facility.

Other Victims Unaffected

At the time of the incident, four others were present in the house besides the deceased. They were not exposed to toxic fumes.

Emergency Response

The office of the county fire brigade in New Tomysl confirmed that after detecting CO, a specialised air‑rescue team from Poznań was called to the scene. When they arrived, the carbon‑monoxide had already dissipated following ventilation by the local firefighters and rescuers.

Key Measurements

Initial readings taken by medical staff were critical to guiding the intervention, according to spokesperson Szymon Maciejewski of the county fire brigade. No dangerous substances or hazards were found later.
