Woman Killed in Bear Attack in Subcarpathian Voivodeship

A 58-year-old woman was fatally attacked by a bear on Thursday, April 23rd, in a forest in the Sanok county of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship, Poland.

Report of the Incident

Police received a report of the attack before 10:40 AM on Thursday, April 23rd. The report indicated a bear had attacked a person in the forest, according to police spokesperson asp. szt. Anna Oleniacz.

Discovery of the Victim

Officers discovered the body of the 58-year-old woman, a resident of Sanok county, at the scene. The body showed visible injuries, the police reported.

Rescue Efforts and Delays

Firefighters were the first to arrive and attempted to save the woman’s life, but the severity and number of her injuries forced them to cease efforts. The attack occurred in a difficult, forested area with no mobile phone coverage, delaying the arrival of medical personnel. Her death was confirmed after 12:00 PM.

Complicated Rescue Operation

The rescue operation was complex and required the cooperation of multiple services. Mountain Rescue (GOPR) personnel arrived on quad bikes, utilizing specialized equipment.

Circumstances of the Attack

According to TVP Rzeszów, the woman’s son, who was with her in the forest, reported the incident. The bear involved was accompanied by three cubs. Police and firefighters remain at the scene, investigating the circumstances of the attack.
