Woman Retires After 20 Years on Minimum Wage: Projected Pension in 2026

A Polish woman who worked for two decades at the national minimum wage is set to retire in 2026, and calculations reveal her expected ZUS (Social Insurance Institution) pension amount.

Retirement After 20 Years of Work

In Poland, retirement typically occurs upon reaching the statutory retirement age, though it is not mandatory. Continuing to work can be beneficial for both the economy and the individual, allowing for increased future benefits.

Given Poland’s low birth rate, aging population, and labor shortages, the government is taking steps to support continued employment, particularly for women, people with disabilities, and seniors.

Later Retirement Means Higher Benefits

Delaying retirement results in a higher pension, influenced primarily by contributions to ZUS and years of insurance (both contributory and non-contributory periods). To receive the guaranteed minimum pension, women must demonstrate at least 20 years of service, while men require 25 years.

The current retirement age is 60 for women and 65 for men. While many economists suggest raising this age, the issue remains politically sensitive, and no changes are currently planned. To retire, one must submit an EMP application to ZUS – online, in person, or by mail.

Pension Calculation Based on Minimum Wage

Based on ZUS estimates provided to infor.pl, the situation of someone earning the minimum wage throughout their career can be illustrated. This example focuses on a woman.

Initial Capital and Calculation Basis

Having started work before January 1, 1999, she also possesses initial capital amounting to 14,895.43 zł as of December 31, 1998. The pension calculation is based on this information.

Projected Pension Amount

Based on these calculations, the projected gross pension would be 1,465.26 zł. However, because the insured meets the requirement of at least 20 years of service, the benefit would be increased to the minimum pension of 1,978.49 zł gross, effective March 1, 2026. A shorter service period would result in the lower calculated amount of 1,465.26 zł gross.

Optimal Timing for Retirement Application

ZUS identifies two favorable times within the year to submit a retirement application.

July Offers Potential Benefit Increase

Specifically, retiring in July may result in a higher benefit due to the inclusion of increased funds in the insurance account.
