WWII Explosives Found During Warsaw Rail Expansion

Sappers in Warsaw safely removed six anti-tank mines and two grenades discovered during railway construction on April 4th.

Discovery During Railway Works

Unexploded ordnance from World War II was found during earthworks related to the expansion of the railway line near ul. Patriotów 287 in Warsaw.

The dangerous items were uncovered during preparatory work for relocating underground infrastructure.

Evacuation and Road Closure

On Saturday, April 4th, after 4:00 PM, residents were evacuated from the area adjacent to the discovery site, and ul. Patriotów was closed to traffic between Zwoleńska and Odeska streets.

Sapper Operation and Findings

Military sappers were dispatched to the location and worked for approximately three hours in a secured area. During the search, a total of eight objects dating back to World War II were recovered: six anti-tank mines and two grenades.

Due to the nature of the find, temporary restrictions were placed on the use of the surrounding area, and traffic was halted on a section of ul. Patriotów.

Situation Resolved, Traffic Resumed

The operation concluded after 7:30 PM. After inspecting the area and removing the dangerous items, residents were allowed to return home, and the previously closed section of the street was reopened to traffic.

Ongoing Risks During Construction

The discovery occurred during work on the expansion of the Otwock railway line. This is another example of how earthworks in areas affected by past military actions require immediate site security and intervention from specialized services.

Bus Route Disruptions

According to WTP, the blocked intersection of Patriotów and Odeska streets caused disruptions to bus line 521. Buses were rerouted in both directions via Patriotów – Odeska – Mrówcza – Zwoleńska – Patriotów. The Odeska 02 and PKP Międzylesie 02 stops were temporarily suspended.
