Karol Kościński, Director General of the Polish Authors’ Association ZAiKS, has assumed the presidency of the European CISAC Committee. His two-year term begins at a critical juncture for creators, as artificial intelligence and digital transformation reshape copyright protection.

ZAiKS’s Regional Leadership Recognized

This appointment affirms ZAiKS’s position as a leading collective management organization in Central and Eastern Europe. It also acknowledges Karol Kościński’s experience and his success in developing ZAiKS, as well as his support for other organizations in implementing effective creator protection solutions.

The European CISAC Committee plays a key role in coordinating initiatives across Europe, particularly in responding to regulatory, technological, and market changes.

Kościński on Poland’s Growing Role

Current Challenges for Creators

The Committee’s agenda highlights the current challenges facing creators and their organizations: the impact of artificial intelligence on the creative sector, changing content consumption models, and the need to adapt licensing and remuneration systems to the dynamic digital market.

Priorities for Kościński’s Term

During his term, Karol Kościński will focus on strengthening cooperation between European organizations and developing solutions to ensure fair remuneration for creators in the digital environment. Promoting a significant private copying compensation system, currently underdeveloped in Poland, will also be a priority.

New challenges for the Committee include protecting creators in the age of AI and licensing for the computer games market.

Kościński’s Background

Karol Kościński is an experienced legal counsel. He has been the Director General of ZAiKS since 2024, and previously served as Deputy Director General of ZAiKS from 2022, overseeing licensing and international relations. He has also worked with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and other national and international institutions focused on copyright law.

From 2012 to 2018, he was responsible for preparing national legislation on copyright and media law in Poland, serving as Director of the Intellectual Property and Media Department at the Ministry of Culture. He coordinated the implementation of various EU laws, including seven copyright directives and the directive on collective rights management. He represented Poland in copyright and media negotiations within the EU Council, appeared before the European Court of Justice, and served as Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights at WIPO.
