The National Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro fled to the United States from Milan on May 9, utilizing a foreign media visa to circumvent legal restrictions.
The Journey to the United States
Zbigniew Ziobro, a suspect in the Justice Fund investigation, confirmed his presence in the United States on May 10. Prior to this, he had spent several months in Hungary, where he received international protection under Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s administration.
Prosecutor Przemysław Nowak announced on Wednesday, May 20, that authorities have officially confirmed the details of the former minister’s departure. Ziobro left Europe by air on May 9, flying from Milan to New York.
Legal Charges and Visa Status
In 2025, the National Prosecutor’s Office issued an indictment against Ziobro regarding the Justice Fund scandal. Investigators suspect him of 26 offenses, including directing an organized criminal group.
Prosecutor Nowak noted that this travel would have been impossible had a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) been issued earlier, as the prosecution only requested it on February 10. Ziobro utilized a “foreign media member” visa to enter the country. When questioned about this definition, the spokesperson explained that it reflects the U.S. perspective, confirming it could potentially apply to Polish media entities.
Investigation Into External Assistance
The prosecutor’s office is currently investigating whether third parties facilitated Ziobro’s escape. As part of this inquiry, Telewizja Republika president Tomasz Sakiewicz was summoned as a witness regarding Ziobro’s employment as a station commentator.
During his testimony, Sakiewicz refused to answer most questions, citing journalistic privilege. Prosecutors are actively examining the circumstances surrounding Ziobro’s hiring by the television station.
