Zelenski in Warsaw: New Details on Purpose of Visit

Ukrainian President Zelenski will travel to Warsaw on 19 December to receive MiG‑29 fighters and negotiate Poland’s role in Ukraine’s security guarantees amid ongoing U.S. ceasefire talks.

MiG‑29 Transfer to Ukraine

Zelenski is scheduled to pick up 14 MiG‑29 aircraft in Warsaw. The transfer coincides with former Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s decision that Ukraine will receive enough aircraft to operate safely for the foreseeable future. In addition, a specified number of retired Su‑22 strike aircraft with modified wing geometry will also be handed over.

Poland’s Role in Security Assurance

The Polish government is expected to join a bilateral security treaty with the United States, providing a guarantee for Ukraine. This agreement is to be ratified by the U.S. Congress, with Poland listed as one of the guarantor states, according to reports by Gazeta Prawna.

Ukrainian US Talks on Demilitarization

Zelenski has urged an immediate suspension of the use of weapons along the entire front line and has pressed the United States for a safety guarantee. Ukraine has offered to demilitarize Donbas only if Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia are also demilitarized.

Internal Polish Disagreement Over Aircraft

Polish officials are divided over the MiG‑29 transfer. President Karol Nawrocki said he learned of transfer plans from media reports, while the head of the presidential office, Marcin Przydacz, confirmed that the president’s representatives have been in talks about the aircraft. The defense minister, Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz, noted that the president’s aides attended meetings, corroborated by official protocols.
