Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the US for perceived delays in aid while highlighting Germany’s increased support and calling for the repatriation of Ukrainian citizens avoiding military service.
Zelensky Criticizes US Aid, Highlights German Support
Zelensky stated that Germany is doing more than any other nation to aid Ukraine, contrasting this with what he described as a lack of funding and commitment from the United States. He emphasized he did not want to compare the two countries but noted Germany’s greater assistance.
He also expressed concern that a potential suspension of arms deliveries could negatively impact Ukraine, particularly regarding air defense systems.
US Aid a “Big Problem,” Trump Signals Pro-Russia Stance
Zelensky characterized the delivery of US weaponry as becoming a “big problem,” warning that continued conflict would result in Ukraine receiving fewer arms. He believes former President Trump is sending “more positive signals towards Russia than Ukraine.”
Zelensky indicated he feels Trump has consistently positioned himself as neutral, and that Russia will become emboldened if the US reduces pressure and adopts a softer dialogue.
Hope for Trump Envoys, Concerns Over American Negotiators’ Views
Zelensky expressed hope that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, associates of Donald Trump, will soon visit Kyiv, acknowledging their current focus on the Middle East conflict has delayed their travel. He lamented that “they don’t have time for Ukraine” at present.
He criticized American negotiators for believing “Russians are winning this war,” a view he strongly disputes, stating it’s not the first time the US has misjudged Russia.
Orbán’s Defeat Welcomed, EU Aid Hopes Rise
Commenting on the Hungarian election results, Zelensky expressed satisfaction that “Hungarians chose Europe,” and hopes this will increase the chances of securing a €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine, previously blocked by outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
He reaffirmed his willingness to follow through with a previous threat to share Orbán’s address with Ukrainian soldiers if Hungary continues to obstruct EU aid, stating Ukraine is fighting for Europe and its defense extends to Orbán himself.
German Support Strengthens, Focus on Draft Evaders
Zelensky visited Berlin on April 14th for German-Ukrainian intergovernmental consultations, during which Germany pledged funding for additional Patriot air defense system missiles.
During the visit, Zelensky raised the issue of Ukrainians fleeing military service, emphasizing the need for Ukraine and Germany to collaborate on their return, asserting that every capable citizen has a constitutional duty to defend their country.
A new cooperation package between Kyiv and Berlin is valued at four billion euros, with Germany elevating its relationship with Ukraine to a strategic partnership.
