Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed in a Sky News interview that Kremlin-linked oligarch Roman Abramovich traveled to Kyiv to act as a go-between for direct communication with Vladimir Putin.
The Backchannel Proposal
Zelensky stated that Roman Abramovich, the former Chelsea FC owner, arrived in Kyiv seeking to deliver a message from the Russian leadership. The oligarch requested that the communication remain strictly confidential and out of the public eye.
According to the Ukrainian president, the message indicated that Russia wanted to understand Kyiv’s position. Zelensky replied that a ceasefire was the immediate priority and that ceding the Donbas region was not an option, refusing to grant Russia such a victory.
Proposed Diplomatic Formats
Zelensky emphasized that he expressed his readiness to meet with the Russian leader in various formats, including bilateral talks or sessions involving the United States and European partners. He noted that he has consistently sought to involve Europe as deeply as possible in the negotiation process.
The Role of the Mediator
Reports from the Financial Times suggest that since the start of the full-scale invasion, Abramovich has attempted to act as a mediator, though his influence has waned following increased American involvement. The meeting in Kyiv likely occurred last month.
International Diplomacy and Sanctions
Zelensky is scheduled to meet King Charles III in London on Monday, following discussions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German opposition leader Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Abramovich, a billionaire who built his wealth in the Russian raw materials sector, has been subject to British and European sanctions, which forced him to sell Chelsea FC.
