Zelensky’s Unexpected Move: Calls for Presidential Elections, “Ukraine Will Be Ready”

During a Tuesday press briefing, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine will be ready to hold presidential elections within 60–90 days, insisting the decision rests solely with its people and urging U.S. and European partners to help secure the vote.

Elections

Zelensky denied that the United States is exerting pressure to influence Ukraine’s electoral process, stating that the choice is primarily a national matter.

He declared readiness for elections within the next 60–90 days and announced that on December 10 he will ask parliamentarians to submit draft legal amendments permitting elections to occur under martial law.

Peace Plan Update

The president said he will send Washington an updated war‑ending plan, working on a comprehensive version today and tomorrow.

He emphasized active progress on all potential actions toward ending the war and said Kyiv and its European allies are prepared to present these results to U.S. partners.

US Pressure

According to the Financial Times, the United States is urging Zelensky to accept a peace proposal by Christmas, which would require Ukraine to return some occupied territories to Russia in exchange for unspecified security guarantees.

Zelensky has consistently stated he will not accept any territorial concessions. This week, he discussed a more favorable proposal while visiting Europe.
