Zero Homework in Polish Primary Schools Cuts Stress, Boosts Free Time, Report Finds

Since April, Polish primary schools have abolished homework under a new ministry regulation, a study shows students now enjoy more free time and lower stress.

Regulation Bans Homework (April 2024)

Polish primary schools have been exempt from homework duties since a Ministry of Education decree issued in April. The policy change was aimed at reducing student workload and allowing more leisure time.

Study Design and Sample

The Institute of Educational Research compiled a report based on 7,500 questionnaires drawn from a representative sample of 2,081 schools across the country. The data was already forwarded to the Ministry of Education.

Key Findings: More Leisure and Less Stress

More than 60% of school principals and over 50% of teachers reported that students now have greater time for rest, play, and physical activity. They also noted a reduction in stress levels.

Teachers’ Perspectives on Workload

52% of teachers assessed that the removal of homework lessened students’ school‑related burdens. Stress scores fell 41% in grades IV–VIII and 31% in grades I–III.

The study concluded that the absence of homework had little to no effect on students’ performance in the high‑school exit exam.

Ministerial Response

Minister of Education Barbara Nowacka highlighted that the positive impact of freed-up time has been evident. She noted that dissatisfaction among some teachers stems from a lack of assessment tools.

Nowacka requested the Institute to analyze how this change affects educational outcomes and student wellbeing, and to deliver recommendations for practice. She indicated that future discussions would examine possible adjustments and directions.

Policy Implications

The report underscores that removing homework can lower stress and enhance recreational opportunities without compromising exam results. Further analysis and recommendations will shape potential policy revisions.
