Following reports of Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjártó sharing information with Russia, Zbigniew Ziobro defended Viktor Orbán and sharply criticized Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Hungarian Minister Allegedly Leaked EU Meeting Details to Russia
According to reporting by “The Washington Post,” Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó regularly communicated with Russia during breaks at European Union meetings, reportedly providing live updates to Sergey Lavrov on ongoing discussions.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded to these reports, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that it was unsurprising that individuals associated with Orbán were informing Moscow about EU Council meetings, adding that this was a contributing factor to his limited public statements on the matter.
Ziobro Attacks Tusk’s Credibility
Zbigniew Ziobro, former Minister of Justice, labeled Tusk a “pathological liar and cynical manipulator,” referencing past accusations Tusk made regarding Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia.
Ziobro claimed Tusk falsely insinuated Trump was a Russian agent and then denied making such suggestions, citing readily available YouTube footage as evidence.
Szijjártó Denies Allegations
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó dismissed the “Washington Post” report as “false information,” accusing critics of attempting to support the TISZA party and establish a pro-war puppet government in Hungary.
Hungarian Elections and Polling Data
Hungary’s parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 12th. Current polling data indicates that the opposition TISZA party, led by Péter Magyar, is leading over Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz in most independent surveys.
A March Minerva poll showed 51.3% support for Magyar’s party, while Fidesz received 40.1%.
Polish President to Visit Budapest
Polish President Karol Nawrocki is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Orbán in Budapest on March 23rd. Journalist Szabolcs Panyi suggests this visit is intended to demonstrate support for Orbán ahead of the elections.
Far-Right Gathering in Budapest
Budapest will also host a gathering of the far-right “Patriots for Europe” coalition on March 23rd, with expected attendees including Marine Le Pen and Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini. The event is organized by a foundation linked to Orbán’s Fidesz party.
