President’s Advisor denies Karol Nawrocki assisted Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro in obtaining Hungarian asylum.
Advisor Denies Presidential Involvement
In the TVP Info program “Woronicza 17” on January 18, Advisor to the President Alvin Gajadhur denied that President Karol Nawrocki was involved in obtaining asylum for Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro in Hungary.
The host had asked about unofficial reports suggesting that Nawrocki had played a significant role in helping Ziobro receive asylum, personally engaged in the process.
Asylum Decision Remains Hungarian Matter
Gajadhur emphasized that the asylum decision is solely a matter for Hungarian authorities and should be directed to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
The advisor suggested that Hungary recognized political persecution in Poland under Prime Minister Donald Tusk, making Ziobro unable to expect a fair trial in his home country.
“This is political persecution,” Gajadhur concluded.
Concerns Raised Over Democracy in Poland
The host pointed out that no Polish court decision has established Ziobro as persecuted, which would be necessary for granting political asylum.
Gajadhur maintained that Hungary, with which Poland cooperates through the Visegrád Group, decided that doubts exist regarding democracy in Poland.
The host noted that according to the rule of law ranking, Poland is 32nd while Hungary is 79th, neither of which is a position to be proud of.
Background on Ziobro’s Legal Situation
Zbigniew Ziobro announced that he received asylum in Hungary on December 22. The Law and Justice politician is suspected of committing 26 offenses, including leading an organized criminal group and improper spending of funds from the Justice Fund.
