Ziobro in the U.S.: Polish Prosecution Investigates Potential Political Protection

Following Zbigniew Ziobro’s departure to the United States, Polish prosecutors are seeking diplomatic clarification on his legal status and potential foreign assistance while finalizing a formal extradition request.

The Shift from Hungary to the United States

Before his departure, Zbigniew Ziobro spent several months in Hungary, where he was granted international protection under the government of Viktor Orban. On May 10, the day after the inauguration of Peter Magyar’s government, the Law and Justice (PiS) MP announced he had relocated to the United States.

Serious Allegations Against the Former Minister

The prosecution accuses the former justice minister of 26 criminal acts, including leading an organized crime group and abusing his position for illicit activities. Allegations include ordering subordinates to break the law to ensure Justice Fund subsidies for specific entities, interfering with tender bids, and approving funding for ineligible recipients.

Seeking Diplomatic Answers

During a May 19 press conference, Justice Minister Waldemar Zurek stated that the ministry has contacted the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. ambassador to clarify how Ziobro entered the U.S. and what his current legal status is. Authorities are also investigating reports that Ziobro may be acting as a media correspondent, raising questions about potential assistance in his stay.

Extradition Process and Political Neutrality

Zurek confirmed that a formal extradition request is prepared, pending a court decision regarding temporary arrest. While acknowledging the U.S. as a key ally, the minister emphasized that Poland will pursue all individuals facing such charges regardless of politics, and will specifically investigate whether Ziobro is operating under a “special political umbrella” in the U.S.
