At about 5:40 p.m., a blaze erupted on the fourth floor of a residential block on Marii Kazimiery Street in Żoliborzu, killing one person, badly injuring an elderly man, and blocking Potocka Street.
Fire Breaks Out on Fourth Floor
At about 5:40 p.m., a fire erupted on the fourth floor of a residential block on Marii Kazimiery Street in Żoliborzu. A roughly 70‑year‑old man was rescued by firefighters and handed to medical responders, where he sustained serious injuries.
Rescue of the Injured Man
While battling the fire, crew members entered the burning apartment and located an unconscious 70‑year‑old man. He was evacuated outside and transferred to medical teams, later taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Extinguishment and Damage Assessment
After removing the victim, crews focused on fully extinguishing the blaze and searching for other occupants. The fire devastated most furnishings, with the interior largely charred. Burned items were removed and the stairwell ventilated.
Police and Traffic Response
Four fire crews, a city operational group, medical paramedics, and two police units are active on site. Officers are securing the area, collecting witness statements, and conducting preliminary investigations. Potocka Street is blocked, and drivers are being diverted around the intersection with Marii Kazimiery.
Recurrent Fire in Same Block
Information from the scene shows this is not the first fire in the block this year. Older windows on one floor still mark a prior blaze. In January, a nighttime fire on a higher floor killed a 76‑year‑old resident and forced the evacuation of about 25 people.
Investigation and Safety Measures
Investigators will determine whether the two incidents are related or independent. Until the inspection concludes, certain units may be unusable, and residents may need to vacate temporarily depending on damage and smoke levels. The patient’s condition will be vital for legal considerations and further actions.
