After the Sejm lifted Zbigniew Ziobro’s immunity on November 7, Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek interrupted reporters at a press briefing and publicly accused the former minister of lying.
Interrupting the Media Dialogue
Minister Waldemar Żurek stopped a press conference in Warsaw after the parliamentary vote on Ziobro and spoke directly to journalist Janusz Kowalski, saying “You are a liar.” The remark was captured on video.
Comments on Rule of Law
During the briefing, Żurek emphasised that the prosecutor’s office is now working at full capacity and that Poland would restore the rule of law, blaming those who had previously broken it. He added that the path would be hard but the government remains determined.
Criticism of Ziobro’s Evasion
Żurek accused the former justice minister of handing a hand to Putin’s closest ally, remarking that the Polish MP was a “cooperational liar.” He pointed to Ziobro’s time in Hungary and suggested that the EU arrest warrant could be used to bring him back.
Legal Proceedings Against Ziobro
On November 7, the Sejm voted to lift Ziobro’s immunity, allowing the National Prosecutor’s Office to arrest him. The prosecutor’s office charged him with 26 offences, including abuse of power and leading an organized criminal group.
Immediate Detention and Detention Orders
The court issued an order to present charges and to detain Ziobro, which was executed by Internal Security Agency officers. Prosecutors justify the order by citing a realistic risk that Ziobro would not attend the hearing.
