Starting January, Poland’s Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) will use phone calls to verify sick‑leave recipients, enforce new rules that allow limited work and impose fines for non‑compliance.
Phone from ZUS Could Determine Benefit Payment
The new rules grant ZUS the authority to conduct controls not only on presently employed individuals but also on those whose insurance has lapsed or on companies that independently issue benefits. Beginning in 2026, officials may phone those on medical leave (L4) to confirm their presence at the given address or invite them for a medical examination. Failure to answer a call or respond within 14 days, or not explaining absence at an examination, can be deemed “lack of cooperation,” leading to suspension of the benefit payment.
Active Phone Number in PUE ZUS Is Mandatory
Experts advise verifying that your current phone number and e‑mail address are registered in the PUE ZUS system before the new regulations take effect. Enabling notifications for new messages helps avoid missing e‑calls. If you cannot answer a call—such as while hospitalized—you should provide a medical document or certificate confirming the situation to prevent penalties.
Work During Sickness Leave Allowed Only in Exceptional Cases
The amendment introduces the possibility of earning wages while on L4, provided it involves a different insurance title. This means an individual employed by two employers can continue working for one if a doctor deems it consistent with their health status. ZUS will verify every such case individually.
