A 15-year-old girl and three accomplices were arrested for attempting to defraud a couple using a fake police officer scam.
The Arrest and Charges
A 15-year-old girl and three of her friends were arrested in connection with an attempted fraud using the “police officer” method. Officers from Warsaw’s Bemowo district determined that they acted jointly and in agreement, collectively facing 15 charges.
The Scam Unfolds
The incident occurred at the end of January this year. After establishing that a couple heading to the bank was likely to be scammed using the “police officer” method, Bemowo police officers immediately launched an operation that became increasingly dynamic by the minute. The scam began when a man claiming to be a post office employee called the victim, informing him that a postman would deliver registered mail. Shortly after, another man claiming to be a police officer contacted the victim.
Police Intervention
The “police officer” explained that the person claiming to be a post office worker was actually a fraudster and that he would participate in a police operation. He requested the amount of savings in the victim’s bank accounts and informed him that a courier would arrive to collect the bank cards along with their PIN codes. Unaware of anything, the man and his wife handed over their bank cards to the arriving courier. They were then telephoned and instructed to cooperate for the success of the operation. Believing they were speaking with real police officers, the couple drove to banks as instructed to withdraw cash, which they were to deliver to another “police officer” at a church.
Additional Crimes
At the church, they noticed a young woman to whom they handed a bag with envelopes prepared at the bank. That’s when the real police officers, who had been observing the situation, intervened. The “police officer” turned out to be a 15-year-old on leave from a correctional facility. Only then did the unaware victims realize they had fallen prey to scammers, and the police actions prevented them from losing 70,000 złoty. However, the criminals’ activities didn’t end there. Police subsequently arrested the 15-year-old’s accomplices – three adults. Investigators determined that the suspects had withdrawn cash totaling over 90,000 złoty fourteen times using ATM cards.
How to Avoid Similar Scams
Remember that scammers have long exploited our ignorance, playing on our emotions and creating scenarios where timing is crucial. Under such manipulation, we stop thinking logically, and soon find ourselves having lost our savings permanently. If you receive a call from someone impersonating a bank employee or loan company requesting sensitive information, hang up and contact your bank’s security department. Never share personal data, bank account details, or email addresses during phone calls. Avoid making financial decisions impulsively – scammers play on our emotions and count on careless actions. Don’t be pressured by time constraints that scammers create to validate their fabricated scenarios. Avoid BLIK transactions to unknown persons and transfers to unknown bank accounts.
