Dogs from closed Sobolew shelter transferred to Kuflewo face allegations of inhumane treatment and improper disposal of remains.
Shelter Closure and Transfer
Approximately 30 dogs from the closed “Happy Dog” shelter in Sobolew were relocated to volunteers from the “Pogotowie dla Zwierząt” organization in Kuflewo (Minsk County, Mazowieckie Voivodeship).
Veterinary Inspection Findings
A January 29-30 veterinary inspection report, accessed by Wirtualna Polska, documented severe irregularities. These included lack of constant water access, inhumane treatment, poor kennel conditions, absence of disinfection mats, and “gross negligence in hygiene.”
Suspicious Equipment and Practices
Inspectors discovered multiple freezers and coolers containing dead animals. Nearby, a meat grinder raised suspicions that deceased dogs might have been processed and fed to live animals at the facility.
Official Complaints and Legal Action
Since 2021, Mrozy township mayor Dariusz Jaszczuk has reported “illegal activities” involving hundreds of dogs and cats to police and prosecutors. He alleges the facility operates as a kennel without required permits, despite being registered as a veterinary hospital.
Organizer’s Defense and Unanswered Questions
Organizer Grzegorz Bielawski denied allegations, emphasizing the facility is an “asylum” not a kennel. He claimed most dogs were in temporary care, but inspectors were shown only five animals during the January inspection, leaving 25 unaccounted for.
