A 22-year-old driver died Saturday in Pomerania after his car struck a volunteer fire department vehicle responding to a Firefighter Day event.
Fatal Collision in Pomeranian Voivodeship
A fatal traffic accident occurred on Saturday, May 2nd, in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. A passenger car collided with a vehicle belonging to the Volunteer Fire Department on provincial road number 224 between Nowa Karczma and Grabowo Kościerskie.
The incident resulted in the death of the 22-year-old Volkswagen driver, and another individual was airlifted to a hospital.
Police Respond to Serious Incident
The Kościerzyna County Police Department received a report of the serious incident around 2:45 PM. The accident took place on a section of provincial road number 224, frequently used by local residents and emergency services.
Driver Loses Control, Causes Head-On Collision
Preliminary findings indicate that the 22-year-old driver from the Gdańsk County lost control of his Volkswagen while traveling towards Egiertowo. The vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Scania-brand Volunteer Fire Department vehicle that was traveling correctly.
Significant Damage and Road Closure
The force of the impact was substantial, as confirmed by emergency services and the extent of damage to both vehicles. The road was completely blocked, and police established detours.
Second Passenger Critically Injured
Two people were traveling in the passenger car. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts by emergency personnel, the driver died at the scene. The second passenger sustained serious injuries and required immediate specialized medical attention.
Air Ambulance Transports Injured Passenger
An air ambulance was dispatched to the scene and transported the injured passenger to a hospital. The individual’s condition has not been officially released, but emergency services reported the injuries were severe enough to necessitate air evacuation.
Firefighters Uninjured, Vehicle Damaged
Firefighters from the Grabowo Kościerskie Volunteer Fire Department, who were involved in the incident, were not injured. However, their vehicle sustained significant damage.
Responding to Firefighter Day Celebrations
The tragedy was compounded by the fact that the firefighters were en route to celebrations related to Firefighter Day, a significant holiday for emergency services personnel in early May.
Fire Engine Operating Within Regulations
At the time of the incident, the Grabowo Kościerskie Volunteer Fire Department vehicle was traveling to official celebrations. The vehicle was operating in accordance with regulations, and the crew had no opportunity to avoid the collision.
Emergency Services at the Scene
Several fire crews were dispatched to the scene, and the operation was directed by the County Commander of the State Fire Service in Kościerzyna. In addition to firefighters, medical rescue teams and police were also present.
