A tragic accident occurred at the intersection of Marszałkowska and Świętokrzyska streets in central Warsaw at approximately 8:50 PM, involving tram line 4 and a pedestrian.
The woman, estimated to be around 50 years old, was struck by a departing tram. Despite rescue efforts, she died at the scene.
Circumstances of the Incident
The incident took place in a busy area of Śródmieście. Preliminary findings suggest the woman entered the path of the departing tram line 4 for currently unknown reasons, becoming trapped underneath.
Emergency Response and Recovery
Emergency services, including firefighters, police, paramedics, Warsaw Tramways personnel, and a prosecutor, were immediately dispatched to the scene.
A crane was used to lift the tram car to free the woman. Paramedics confirmed her death after extraction.
Traffic Disruption and Investigation
Tram traffic in the area of the Marszałkowska and Świętokrzyska intersection was blocked in both directions, impacting a key transportation route in central Warsaw.
The scene was secured, and a thorough investigation is underway under the supervision of a prosecutor to determine the exact circumstances and cause of the accident.
Tram Line Diversions and Replacement Service
Warsaw Transport Authority (WTP) reports disruptions to lines 4, 15, 16, and 18 due to the incident and emergency services activity near the Metro Świętokrzyska tram stop.
Lines 16, 4, 15 and 18 have been diverted via routes including Marszałkowska, Nowowiejska, Aleja Niepodległości, and Aleja Jana Pawła II. A replacement bus line, “Z ZA TRAMWAJ,” is operating between Metro Politechnika and Muranowska 03.
Passengers are advised to use metro line M1 between Metro Politechnika and Dw. Gdański.
