Activists set up a tent camp outside the Polish parliament, urging Speaker Szymon Hołownia to fast-track their climate and transport bill.
Protest and demands
On Friday (26 September), activists from “Last Generation” established a tent camp in front of the Sejm, demanding that Szymon Hołownia refer their climate and transport bill to committee. They argue that climate collapse is advancing, while PKP Cargo workers face job losses, and the bill could help both. “We cannot wait. Poland must urgently address public transport and climate collapse,” they stated. “We will stay here as long as necessary.”
Bill details
“Last Generation” has initiated an occupation of the Sejm, pushing for immediate committee review of their “Lex Last Generation” bill. Yesterday, the Left Parliamentary Club submitted the bill under legislative initiative. The activists call this a turning point in their 1.5-year campaign. The bill proposes diverting highway funds to rail and buses, introducing a 50-zł monthly regional transport pass, and mandating that over 50% of freight be transported by rail by 2035.
They emphasize the role of freight rail in civil defense, evacuation, and military transport, while demanding reduced truck dominance, which they say fuels climate crisis emissions, causes fatal road accidents, and harms local communities.
